Blue Light Effects on the Skin

Blue Light Effects on the Skin

What is Blue Light?

Blue light, also known as high-energy visible light (HEV), is part of the visible light spectrum seen by humans. It has a short, high-energy wavelength ranging from 400-600 nm. Humans used to receive most of their blue light exposure directly from the sun. However, with the invention of screened electronic devices such as computers and phones, that is no longer the case. We now get 40% of our blue light exposure from the sun and the remaining 60% from devices.

Benefits of Blue Light

Blue light exposure does have some benefits. For example, blue light helps us wake up in the morning and provides energy throughout the day. It’s also shown to help combat depression and treat infections such as Propionibacterium Acnes, which is the bacteria that is linked to acne. However, too much blue light exposure can lead to damage to the skin and eyes.

Negative Effects of Blue Light

Blue light is a type of free radical with studies proving its ability to penetrate deeply into the skin, even deeper than UVA/UVB rays, damaging all skin layers. Due to extensive free radical damage, blue light additionally contributes to premature photoaging, hyperpigmentation, inflammation, and decreased skin immunity. Too much blue light exposure can also have a negative effect on the eyes and may lead to age-related macular degeneration.

How to Protect Your Skin from Blue Light

You can protect your skin against prolonged blue light exposure by using topical antioxidants. Free radicals often have an unpaired electron in their outer orbit so they try to steal an electron from another substance in the skin to become a pair. However, stealing an electron from another substance leads to free radical damage. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals in the body by providing the extra electron the free radical needs, without becoming a free radical itself. Therefore, using skincare products that contain antioxidants is a great way to protect your skin against harmful blue light effects. It’s important to note that although topical antioxidants help protect your skin from blue light damage, some damage is still expected to occur and cannot be completely erased or prevented.
